If students, teachers or the school are mentioned, confidentiality is necessary. Use a generic name or number. Pay attention to those things we are discussing in our curriculum design such as constructivism, cooperative learning, thematic or cross-disciplinary work, problem solving, project-based activities, group and individual dynamics. Focus on instruction and student learning, not on teacher personality or student behavior unless it directly relates to your observation.
Some of the things to focus on in the technology enhanced learning community for this study:
Has working in the technology lab given the student an incentive to take more math or science or to go to college or major in computers?
What is the interaction and collaboration among gender and race?
What is the interaction between student and teacher? For instance: does the use of computers enable a shift from didactic to interactive learning, from teacher centered to learner centered, from fact teller to collaborator, from memorization to inquiry and invention, and from quantity of memorized facts to quality of understanding?
Do you note any shift from direct instruction to constructivism and discovery learning? Is problem-based instruction being used? If so, what are your reflections on its success.
Does a technology learning community seem to improve instruction for diverse learners?
Address any digital divide issues you note. What are they? How could the situation be improved?
The cases should involve your observations over the semester. If you note a problem that promotes the digital divide, what was done to solve it and how would you have handled it? On the other hand if you note an activity that promotes digital equity, describe it in your study. You will present your findings in a written summary which you will post to the sced720101 discussion list and give an electronic presentation on the date indicated in the class schedule.
