The annual Tre Day Birthday Bash Bowl-A-Thon to benefit the Tre Day Scholarship Project for the School of Mass Communication will be held Saturday, July 21 at Millenium Lanes in Maumelle. Registration starts at 2, with bowling beginning at 3. Come on out and cheer on the SMC teams!�

Cindy Boland-Perez, Institute of Government: $9,500 from the Arkansas State Police for the 2006 Alcohol Impaired Driving Survey
David Montague, Criminal Justice: $28,947 from the Arkansas Dept. of Health and Human Services for In-Service Training for Case Workers
Joe Bryan, MidSouth: $5,616,082 from the Arkansas Dept. of Health and Human Services for the Arkansas Partnership for Public Child Welfare
The School of Mass Communication has been given the green light to hire a new station manager and a videographer/editor for its educational cable access channel 62. UALR will collaborate with several entities including the Clinton School of Public Service and the University of Arkansas for Medical Services to produce original programming that reflects the educational and public service mission of the university.
Dr. Richard Zraick in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology has been invited to co-author the 8th edition of the leading voice disorders text The Voice and Voice Therapy. The book has been the leading text in the field for over 35 years and currently commands 65% of the market. The new edition will be available in spring 2009. Authors: Daniel Boone, Stephen McFarlane, Shelly von Berg and Richard Zraick.
School of Mass Communication Professor Bruce Plopper won the Laurence Campbell Research Award for writing the top paper in the Scholastic Journalism division of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Media (AEJMC) this year. The paper, titled “Measuring Students’ Journalism Career Potential: A Simple Inventory,” identifies the values, beliefs and behaviors that are strongly associated with potential success in the field.
Heather Best, a graduate student in the Conflict Mediation Certificate Program received top honors in the social science category for her paper presented at the UALR Graduate Research Forum. The paper, titled “Communication Ambiguity and Cosmology Episodes: An Analyisis of Crisis Communication Following the Sago Mine Disaster,” looks at the effect of failures in crisis communication on those who are attempting to cope with the crisis event. Ms. Best is also the Associate Director of the Center for Survey Research in the Institute of Government at UALR.
Kristy Loftin, one of our first audiology (AuD) doctoral students, has been selected for a two-month, full-time research training experience at Vanderbilt University. NIH has funded three centers around the country to provide AuD students with intensive research opportunities and this year marks the first round of students to be selected. The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology is proud to have one of the first students selected for this national program.
