Author Crystal Waters, has written a chapter called "Color & Contrast" in her book, "Universal Web Design" she says: "What color combinations are the most readable? It's generally accepted that the best color scheme for reading is black text on a white background [...] high contrast... However, because a person viewing a monitor is staring straight at a light source, black text on a white background isn't the most comfortable to look at for long periods of time. It can help readers if you take the contrast down just a touch, especially if you're asking them to read a lot of text. This could also mean using a light color rather than white in combination with black (either as a background or text color). On-screen, it generally seems that black and yellow make the highest readability combination." (pg 188)
There is an interesting article by Aries Arditi, PhD on Effective Color Contrast found at http://www.lighthouse.org/color_contrast.htm. He is a Senior Fellow in Vision Science in Lighthouse International's Arlene R Gordon Research Institute.
Lighthouse International has a companion brochure entitled "Making Text Legible: Designing for People with Partial Sight." available at http://www.lighthouse.org/print_leg.htm This brochure is based on his earlier work with Kenneth Knoblauch.
