Research/Project Interests

Applied Environmental Health Sciences and Health

My research/project interests focus on the interaction and interrelationships between human and natural ecosystems. Consulting projects have included nonpoint source monitoring, toxics transport modeling, risk assessment, ambient air sampling, lakes monitoring, and environmental impact analysis. I am currently working on two different research projects. The first project, "Toxicity Characteristics of Urban Surface Waters", involves extensive water quality monitoring under base flow and storm event conditions. Various physical, chemical and biological parameters are being compared with toxicity analyses. A second research project, "Photochemical Assessment Modeling: Ozone Precursor Sources, Locations and Emission Characteristics" is in its early development stages. This project will incorporate the use of Geographic Information Systems to establish ozone precursor source locations and characteristics. The GIS data base will be incorporated into a photochemical assessment model.

Student Research
Mentoring
Tulane MPH Student Mentor - I am currently serving as a research mentor for Chris Kinslow's masters degree capstone experience for Tulane University. The primary objective of this research is to determine whether a relationship exists between toxicity in urban surface waters and the occurrence of coliform organisms which are used to indicate the presence of pathogens. This research will be completed in the Fall 1999 semester.

McNair Scholars Research Mentor - I served as a mentor for LaSandra Jefferson who is a major in the environmental health sciences program. LaSandra conducted research concerning occupational injuries and illnesses throughout Region 6 of the United States Department of Labor. My mentorship began in May, 1996 and completed in September, 1996. I was responsible for supervising all aspects of the research project which included the student's proposal development, literature review, data collection and analysis, and reviews of the draft and final research report.

TEAMS (Teaching Enhancement and Advancement for Minority Students) Mentor - I served as a mentor for Rebecca Campalans who was a major in the environmental health sciences program. I was required to prepare a research proposal for a 6 week program. During this period I was responsible for guiding all aspects of Rebecca's research included in the proposal. Rebecca created a SWEEP (Streams and Watersheds Environmental Educaiton Program) manual and presented results of her research to other TEAMS participants. Summer I & II, 1995.
