            VIII.    Course Description

Emphasis is placed on developing an individual level of walking performance. Practical applications of principles of exercise and the components of an effective cardiovascular workout in achieving fitness through walking.

 

IX.              Course Objectives

·         When giving a waking fitness program, the student will identify the role of physical activity in that program.

·         The student will identify and discuss the need for development and maintenance of such basic elements of physical fitness as cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.

·         The student will identify their own limitations and capabilities in respect to walking.

·         Given proper appraisal and evaluation in a testing program, the student will describe the status of their own physical fitness.

·         The students will identify and discuss procedures and considerations in planning a personal fitness program

·         The students will identify and discuss resources that are available and can contribute to a walking program.

XI. Assignments, evaluations procedures and grading policy

Course Requirements:

1. Projects. The following projects will be completed during the semester:

a. Exercise log. Each student will record the walking program he/she performs each week.

2. Examination. A comprehnsive exam will be given on the last day of class. This exam will cover materials given out in class, the text book, and class lectures.

XII. Class Policies

1.      Attendance: 5pts. off for each absence. You have till 10 min. to after class starts to receive credit for class participation. Do not be late for class.  All assignments late –10 from total points.

2.      Text: (see required text)

3.      Locker and towel: Check with DSC equipment services.

4.      Bring book, notebook, and pen everyday.

5.      Modest, non‑binding attire.

6.      No cell phones, beepers in class or on walk. Turn off.

WEEK 1&2

SYLLABUS REQUIREMENTS, CARDIOVASCULAR TEST WORKOUT SHEETS, RESTING HEART RATE AVERAGE, TARGET HEART RATE RANGE, FIGURE HEART RATE RANGE.

WEEK 3&4

HEART RATE RECOVERY TEST. GO OVER WALKING FORM AND PRACTICE WALKING THEN STOPING AND CHECKING PULL RATE. ASSIGN RESTING HEART RATE AVERAGE AND 1.5 WALK/RUN TEST.

WEEK 5

GO OVER STRETCHES.

WEEK 6‑12

WORK OUTS BEGIN FOR EACH CLASS.BEGIN WITH30 MINUTES AND TRY TO WORK UP TO AN HOUR IF POSSIBLE.

REVIEW FINAL
